The New Passenger Terminal

New passenger terminal, world class facilities, new experiences… where every passenger is a valued guest.

The scaffolding is off and Muscat International Airport’s sprawling New Passenger Terminal is ready to welcome you in its luxurious fold – a world class facility structured to make comfort a top priority.

Right, the big day is here, and Oman Air, the national carrier of Oman, is set to soar on new wings of progress. The mood is, indeed, ecstatic and the ambience celebratory as we gear up to serve you from our vantage position at the impressive New Passenger Terminal. Spread across an area of 335,000 square metres, the New Passenger Terminal is a state-of-the-art facility; one that is comparable to the best airports in the world.

With an initial capacity to handle 12 million passengers annually (with provisions to expand it to 24, 36 and 48 million passengers in planned phases), the New Passenger Terminal is the crowning glory of Oman’s developmental trajectory. It boasts 96 check-in counters, 12 transfer desks and 29 passenger boarding bridges .

It has a baggage processing capacity of 5,500 bags per hour, two parallel runways capable of serving the world’s largest aircraft – A380, 6,000 square metres of Duty-Free shopping, 8000 car parking capacity and an Air-side hotel with 90-room capacity, among other top class facilities and services.

The external works include 2,054 covered parking slots, 2,262 open parking spots, and 406 parking spaces for airport employees. There are 85 counters maintained by Royal Oman Police for Emigration and Immigration.  The New Passenger Terminal building also boasts of two main gates to accommodate heavy aircraft, such as A380 and B747.

There is an array of retail outlets located at the New Passenger Terminal, and there are offices for airlines, car rental agencies, information desks, and other services. Security is of the highest standard and the airport authorities have a greater objective of making the New Passenger Terminal among the top 20 airports in the world by 2020.

Driven to create a benchmark in comfort and hassle-free airport experience, the New Passenger Terminal will ensure that the number of processing points in the journey are significantly reduced. To add to the speed factor, initial security screening at the terminal entrance has been eliminated for passengers as well as people accompanying them. And to further add to the ease of passengers queuing up to check in, there is a dedicated counter for over-sized bags. Oman Air offers all guests a seamless check-in experience, with designated check-in area for premium guests. Oman Air guests travelling Business and First Class can take advantage of the airline’s premium lounges.

For passengers arriving in Oman, the new central check-in system for baggage will eliminate the need to pass it through the security. The baggage will be sorted by the system, which will help ease the flow and expedite the processing time at touch points.

From then to now:

As the new passenger terminal gets ready with its statuesque structure and impressive world class facilities, it is remarkable to note the progressive phases of Muscat International Airport.

From the dirt track landing strip at the then Bait Al Falaj Airport (now the busy MBD area) in 1929, mainly used for military purposes, for aircrafts of Petroleum Development Oman Company and a few a civilian flights, to the Seeb International Airport, which was formally inaugurated on 23rd December 1973, Oman’s expansion of aviation services and facilities has been steady and staggering. The airport witnessed major expansions in the Arrival and Departure Terminals in 1983 and the following years saw the airport growing in scope and reach.

In 2008 the airport was renamed as Muscat International Airport. The new passenger terminal is an edifice of excellence on all quarters.

Oman Air flights will be the first to land and first to take-off from the new terminal.
